Demand for Dohnes strong at the Suidplaas August Auction
DOHNE MERINO, AUCTIONS | Aug 13, 2021
Green and yellow spring landscapes set the scene for visitors to Klipbankskloof farm, the home of Suidplaas Dohnes, for the 23rd Suidplaas Dohnes Production Auction.
During 2021, we’ve seen extremely high meat prices in South Africa (as well as the projection of an above-average grain harvest for the area). Thus, the demand for the dual-purpose Dohne Merino breed once again proved strong, as 400 young ewes and all 110 A+AA rams were sold for record-breaking prices at the auction.
Congratulations to Cornel Landman from Karoo Lusern who bought the top ram on the day. Lot 30 has already been used in two Dohne studs in the past. This ram was sold for an impressive R83 000. Cornel took part in the auction online from his hometown of Oudtshoorn, and could therefore not make the photo opportunity.

Here are more statistics from an eventful, successful day:
– Cornel and the Karoo Lusern team also bought the second-highest selling ram (Lot 15) for R52 000
– The average price per ram for the 110 rams amounted to a stellar R17 963.64 – a record for Suidplaas Dohnes
– An excellent average price of R3 468.75 was attained for the 400 young ewes sold – another Suidplaas record
– Amerika Landgoed, the biggest client of Suidplaas Dohnes, bought the most rams on the day (18 rams).
In another first for the Suidplaas Dohnes team, breeders could attend the auction online as well as in person – enabling them to view and bid for the rams of their choice from the comfort of their home.
According to owner, Wynand du Toit, “Suidplaas Dohnes will definitely host digital auctions in the future to accompany our in-person auctions. We experienced the accessibility and the benefits of having an online auction (especially during Covid times) as buyers were impressed by how easily OVK’s platforms worked.”
From the Suidplaas Dohnes team, thank you to all our faithful clients who came from near and far, including At Liebenberg, who attended all the way from Kroonstad, and breeders from as far as the Swartland, Eastern Cape and Southern Cape.
Our thanks also to new clients who have put their trust in Suidplaas Dohnes, believing in our genetics for profit.
And finally, a special thank you to Stephan van der Westhuizen and the OVK team, for ensuring another successful auction.
