Going virtual: How our online auction works…
DOHNE MERINO, TIPS, AUCTIONS | July 21, 2021
For the first time, the Suidplaas Dohnes Ram Auction will not only be held live at the Suidplaas Dohnes farm (called Klipbankskloof) outside Protem, but will also be held virtually for Dohne breeders who can’t attend in person.
The online auction is being administered by the OVK Group, partner to Suidplaas Dohnes. According to the OVK Group Stud Advisor, Stephan van der Westhuizen, this change benefits both the buyer and the seller. He says, “This auction will once again make the best genetic material available to the industry. Rams undergo strict selection criteria and that gives the buyers the assurances they need to make use of the online auction system, while also offering Suidplaas Dohnes access to a wider selection of potential buyers.”
So how does an online auction work – and how can you attend the ram auction virtually? We chatted to Vincent Pike, Auction Clerk at OVK, to learn more.
Why the new focus on online auctions?
Online auctions were initiated by OVK due to the growing demand for such a platform. We also have to keep up with the times and the changes that are constantly taking place. This platform is used to accommodate buyers across South Africa who are not able to attend the auctions in person.
How can online auctions help buyers now access world-class Dohne genetics?
Buyers from across the country are now able to view the catalogue data and visual material online. This also enables the buyer to have enough time to compare breed characteristics to ensure that he or she makes the best purchase to add to their stud.
How do you register for an online auction?
We’ve compiled a step-by-step guide for those joining the auction online for the first time.
How long prior to the auction should you register online?
It is mandatory that buyers register at least 24 hours before the auction.
How do you bid on your Dohne of choice and ensure your bid is captured?
The OVK platform is easy to use and allows the buyer to place a bid by keeping in the bid button for a second. This also ensures that buyers don’t bid accidently.
How does payment and transport of the animals work?
Payments should be made on the same day of the auction. Animals will not be allowed to leave the premises without valid proof of payment. Unless otherwise stated by the seller, transport can be arranged by OVK, but is for the buyer’s account.
How safe and secure is buying livestock online?
A registered buyer’s details are confidential and are not accessible to anyone else. A buyer is assigned a bid number that replaces any direct reference to the client. OVK has a record of existing customers. In the case of a new customer, their FICA is required and the livestock does not leave the premises unless payment has been made.
Where should buyers click to join the online auction?
Here’s the link to join the online auction.
