Suidplaas Dohnes January auction: The results of the day
DOHNE MERINO, AUCTIONS | Jan 26, 2023
It was a pleasure to welcome friends of Suidplaas – old and new – to Klipbankskloof for our January 2023 auction.
It was a lovely summer’s day in Protem, and the proceedings were a reminder of the valuable progress made in the Dohne industry and on Suidplaas over the past decades.
Optimistic about the industry
Dohne farmers also showed that they remain optimistic about the industry, despite some of the challenges facing not only the agriculture sector, but South Africa as a whole.
The top ram, Lot 10, was sold for R75 000 to father-and-son pair, Jan and Jaco Schoonwinkel of the Swartsdam Farm near Swellendam. The Schoonwinkels are longtime friends of Suidplaas and also bought the top ram at last year’s August auction.
With an average ram selling price of R16 706, the auction was also a celebration of quality genetics across the Suidplaas flock.
The day offered many more highlights:
– A total of 300 ewes were sold, at an average price of R2 500.
– The second-highest ram selling price was R70 000. This was for the sale of Lot 80 to Jaco Uys from Coeja Boerdery near Heidelberg.
– Jan-Paul Kempen of the Amerika Estate outside Bredasdorp bought the most rams on the day.
Suidplaas owner, Wynand du Toit, looked back on a successful day:
“Six fellow stud breeders bought rams today. We hope that these Suidplaas genes will have a positive impact on their studs, and look forward to welcoming them back for our next auction.”
He had this to say about some of the current obstacles to sheep farming in South Africa. “Wool prices have already climbed 17% since the start of the year, and we hope it will continue to improve. Meat prices remain a little less certain, but we believe they’ll also only go up in the coming months.”

Giving back to the community
This year, the Du Toit family teamed up with Van Loveren Wines in Robertson to support a worthy cause. Suidplaas gifted each ram buyer a pair of custom wine bottles featuring the Du Toits’ beloved dachshund pair, Pablo and Glipsie. And thanks to Van Loveren, the funds from the gifts were donated to the Winelands SPCA branch to support their work protecting animals against cruelty and neglect.
In the spirit of supporting local causes, the Suidplaas team also donated to an old age home in Bredasdorp. All the proceeds from the sale of Lot 66 went to Suideroord Home for the Elderly.
Madré du Toit, Wynand’s wife, explains that giving back to their community is very important to the family. “We are grateful for the community’s support every year, and we believe it’s important to offer our support in turn. There are so many people doing amazing work to look after our people.”
According to Wynand, it all starts with the Dohne community members, who converge on Klipbankskloof for the Suidplaas auctions. “Thank you to all our friends, partners and supporters for your loyalty and trust. Seeing the same faces return each year makes us proud to know that farmers rely on the Suidplaas name to introduce strong genes to their flocks.”
