Dohne Merino merger: Suidplaas and Vlakkloof join forces
DOHNE MERINO, MERGER | SEP 13, 2021
Suidplaas Dohnes has merged with Vlakkloof Dohnes, the Dohne Merino stud farm belonging to Daniel Giliomee. Vlakkloof Dohnes is also situated in the Overberg, close to Bredasdorp.
Suidplaas owner, Wynand du Toit says, “This merger will benefit the industry, and especially our Suidplaas and Vlakkloof clients. The Vlakkloof stud introduces an even larger gene pool which allows us to use stricter selection criteria.”
Wynand will continue to manage the two studs separately in the short term. Only the top 20% of the registered ewes from Vlakkloof have been selected as part of the merger. While the ewes remain the property of Vlakkloof farm, they have already been moved to Klipbankskloof (the home of Suidplaas) and have already been covered by Suidplaas rams. The Suidplaas team is now looking forward to seeing the first fall of lambs to be born following the move.
The Vlakkloof stud adds immense value to Suidplaas Dohnes – in particular introducing their excellent wool characteristics. Vlakkloof Dohne Merinos are well known for their high clean yields and length, providing exceptional wool quality.
Beneficial all round
According to Vlakkloof owner, Daniel Giliomee, “My talks with Wynand about a possible merger have been ongoing for quite some time. We’ve both given this a lot of thought. And we both concluded that the merger would be beneficial all round.”
By managing the two studs separately, clients will still be able to buy both Suidplaas Dohnes (JG) and Vlakkloof Dohnes (VK) at the Suidplaas Dohnes auctions, which take place in January and August.
Wynand adds, “The main goal of Suidplaas Dohnes is to remain at the forefront of genetic progress. So this merger will be of immense value – both for our clients and for us.”
