2022 JANUARY auction

Our merger pays off during the Suidplaas January auction

Our January 2022 Suidplaas Dohnes Production Auction provided a number of firsts in our 50the year since Suidplaas was founded. Notably, this was the first auction where both Suidplaas and Vlakkloof Dohnes were available, following the merger of the two studs in September last year.

This was also the most successful January auction for Suidplaas, since we started hosting two auctions a year.

Wynand du Toit, owner of Suidplaas Dohnes said, “By offering both Suidplaas and Vlakkloof Dohnes, we could really satisfy a large client base with many different priorities and needs. Suidplaas focuses on genetics, in order to create profit for our clients. And with Vlakkloof joining us, it has helped to expand our gene pool, while bringing their exceptional wool quality to the mix.”

The rams were sold separately under the Suidplaas and Vlakkloof prefixes (JG and VK respectively) at the auction.

The auction once again saw buyers bidding in-person at Klipbankskloof Farm, as well as via the OVK online platform

There were a number of top-performing rams at the auction:

– Lot 80, a Suidplaas ram, was also sold for R70 000 to HL Kitshoff & Sons of Mooreesburg.

– Lot 12, a Vlakkloof ram, was sold for R65 000 to HL Kitshoff & Sons.

Other notable stats for the day:

– 118 rams were sold for an average price of R17 475

– The average price for the 354 ewes amounted to R3 556

The auction brought the Du Toit family together – a first family get-together at an auction in a number of years. In fact, Wynand’s daughter, Alé opened the event with inspirational words of hope for farmers and others attending.

Making predictions for 2022

Wynand said he expects 2022 to be a good year for Dohnes, despite a dip in red meat prices following the November and December highs. Wool prices also enjoyed an increase at the start of 2022, with certified sustainable wools, as well as finer micron merino fleece wools proving to be in higher demand.

Still, he says farmers should also prepare for higher input costs in 2022 – including transport and electricity costs.

Our sincere thanks

He thanked all those who attended and bid – both in person and online. He also thanked Suidplaas partners, including Stephan van der Westhuizen and the rest of the OVK team, as well as BKB’s Pierre Vlok for attending.

During the August Suidplaas Dohnes auction, we’ll also celebrate our 50the birthday. We look forward to seeing you there.
