Suidplaas joins Uruguay Dohne conference
DOHNE MERINO, INTERNATIONAL REACH | MAY 15, 2018
Suidplaas Dohnes joined the second International Dohne Merino Conference in Uruguay.
Wynand du Toit attended the conference in April. Dohne breeders from around the world connected on issues such as:
– The genetics of Dohnes
– Meat and wool markets
– The science of the breed
– Dohne trends for the future
Wynand and other delegates took a technical tour around Uruguay, seeing some of the country’s best studs, plants and wool mills.
While the Dohne Merino originated in South Africa (it was started in the 1930s by the South African Department of Agriculture), the Dohne is now bred around the world.
It’s become increasingly popular because:
– Dohnes can survive and thrive on poor vegetation;
– They’re well adapted to a range of environmental and climatic conditions;
– And they’re ideal as a dual purpose breed – for both wool and meat.
Delegates at the conference came from as far as Argentina, Australia, France, Spain and the USA.
